9. Porta Verona

Entering the passageway and stepping outside the fortress for about ten meters, turn your gaze to the imposing facade of the gate. You can admire the central spot on the gate where the effigy of the Venetian Lion of St. Mark once stood. This symbol of the Serenissima Republic of Venice was destroyed by Napoleon as an act of disdain after the Treaty of Campoformio in 1797.

A visual reconstruction of how the gate must have originally appeared is placed and visible at the beginning of the bridge.

Re-entering the city through the gate and keeping to the right, you will see the gardens of Parco Catullo and the Caserma Francesco I from 1822, now housing the State Police School.
